Which probe position is best to view the aortic arch?
Answer: E
Explanation:
The aortic arch is best imaged by echo using the suprasternal view, which is shown by the transducer position “E”. For this view, the transducer is placed in the suprasternal notch which sits above the sternum and clavicles. The patient is best positioned on their back with their neck and head extended. A 12 o’clock position of the probe marker allows for imaging of the aortic arch in a coronal plane. The aortic arch from ascending to descending aorta can be visualized.
The other imaging views may allow for the visualization of different parts of the aorta. For example, the abdominal aorta is best imaged with subcostal imaging, “A” on the image.
Parasternal and apical imaging, so probe positions “C” and “B” respectively, are helpful for the aortic valve and ascending aorta. These views are generally less helpful with viewing the aortic arch in its entirety.
